Working Together
2023
Creating Our Class Culture
Over the first few weeks of the year we spent some time looking at the Ilam School Values and developing what they look like in Room 3. Below is what we came up with.
Room 3 2022
August 2022 - Our Visit to Ferrymead
What a fantastic visit we had to Ferrymead - It was very interesting seeing what schooling was like in the 1900s and also experiences what life was like in the 1950s.

All About Room 3
They have taken a while to put together but we finally have them up on the wall, our 'All About Me' poems. As a class, before we started writing we answered the following questions.
Why are we writing?
Why are we writing?
- To learn how to use the ‘Writing Process’ (Planning, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Conferencing and Sharing)
- To share things about ourselves in a poem
- Our family, parents and friends - putting them on our class website
- The people who spend time in Room 3 (on the walls)
- We want to use interesting and creative thoughts and words to share things about ourselves
Our Thinking Classroom
We have been working hard on creating a thinking classroom in Room 3. We make it a real focus to ensure that we are engaging with one another and having the opportunity to think about and respond to and ask as many questions as possible. We have been working on a piece of artwork based on Auguste Rodin’s famous sculpture of ‘The Thinker.’
Cultural Week - 14th-18th March
Today we learnt how to play Tuho which is a traditional Korean game - Check out the clip about how to play and then scroll down to see our pictures. Currently our class champ is Dylan with a score of 21, Grace came in second with 15.
Our Learning in Science
For Science in Room 3, we have been looking into how the immune system works to fight infection in our bodies. So far we have learnt about our body's first line of defence, cells and what certain parts of our cells do. We had lots of fun looking at objects under the microscope such as leaf and onion cells where we could see the cell walls and nucleus. We will also be learning about some of the immune cells and how they function in response to infection.
Using our VWS (Vertical Work Surfaces) for the first time
We have been busy developing our thinking classroom. One of the ways we have have started doing this is working in groups of 3 at our vertical work surfaces. We work standing up using whiteboard pens because we feel more comfortable taking risks with our learning if we are able to rub something out. We also have to share the pens. Miss McMurtrie explained that one of the reasons we are standing up is because there are experts that suggest that we do more thinking that way and we stay more actively engaged as leaners. At first we weren't sure that we agreed with her but after working together we reflected and found that:
Make sure that you scroll past the slide show to see the fantastic 'Room 3 Ways of Being" that combined ideas created.
- "Everyone in the group was thinking!" - (Rayan)
- "It was easy to make sure everyone in the group was included." - (Jonny)
- "It was great to be with small groups (three students) because you could all have a turn and feel included." - (Uldana)
- "It was fun working together as a team." (Luka
- "Standing up made it easier to work as a group, we could all see what was going on." - (Christina)
- We all discussed that it was easy to develop and change ideas working on the large whiteboards.
